These massive, natural blockages have created volatile, rapidly growing upstream lakes. The initial wave of landslides has already left a devastating footprint across the region’s mountainous terrain. The Engineering Challenge

Because the major river networks of Nepal flow directly into the densely populated plains of northern India, the crisis has quickly evolved into a cross-border humanitarian concern. Disaster management agencies from both nations have established a joint emergency command center to share real-time water level data and coordinate evacuation protocols. Satellite imagery is being analyzed hourly to map changing flood patterns and predict vulnerability zones. For now, thousands of families along the riverbanks have been moved to higher ground, waiting anxiously to see if the engineering defenses will hold.
